Asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment
-
Brod RD, Flynn HW Jr, Lightman DA: Asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Arch Ophthalmol 1995, 113:1030-1032. The authors reviewed the clinical findings and follow-up data on 31 eyes in 28 patients with asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. During the follow-up period (0.5 to 12.1 years) only two patients had progression of the retinal detachment. Based on their data, the authors recommend considering observation as a reasonable management option in reliable patients with asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Retinal detachment following intracapsular and extracapsular cataract extraction
-
Naeser K, Nielsen NE: Retinal detachment following intracapsular and extracapsular cataract extraction. J Cataract Refract Surg 1995, 21:127-131. This paper compared the incidence of retinal detachment after intracapsular cataract extraction with the incidence after extracapsular cataract extraction. Retinal detachment occurred in 1.3% of patients after intracapsular surgery and in 0.41% of patients after extracapsular cataract extraction. The study also showed that the incidence of retinal detachment was higher for patients younger than 70 years of age compared with patients older than 70 years.

Incidence of retinal detachment after cataract surgery and neodymium: YAG laser capsulotomy
-
Powell SK, Olson RJ: Incidence of retinal detachment after cataract surgery and neodymium: YAG laser capsulotomy. J Cataract Refract Surg 1995, 21:132-135. The authors retrospectively reviewed the incidence of retinal detachment after cataract surgery and neodynium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser capsulotomy. The incidences of retinal detachment following phacoemulsification surgery and neodynium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser capsulotomy were 0.75% and 0.82%, respectively. Retinal detachments occurred at a mean time of 11.6 months after cataract surgery and 13.5 months after capsulotomy. There was an increased incidence of retinal detachment following cataract surgery complicated by posterior capsule rupture and vitreous loss.

Intraocular intrusion of sutures after retinal detachment buckling surgery
-
Weinberger D, Lichter H, Gaton DD, Kremer I, Axer-Siegel R, Yassur Y: Intraocular intrusion of sutures after retinal detachment buckling surgery. Retina 1995, 15:417-421. The authors described nine cases of intrusion of scleral buckling sutures into the eye after retinal detachment surgery. In five of the nine eyes, subretinal or vitreous hemorrhage complicated the intrusion, and one eye developed an associated retinal hole and detachment. The authors recommend cutting the silicone band when hemorrhage complicates intrusion of scleral buckle sutures.
