-
Blair C, Ramey CT, Hardin JM: Early intervention for low birthweight, premature infants: participation and Intellectual development. Am J Ment Retard 1995, 99:542-554. The Infant Health and Development Program was an eight-site randomized controlled trial of comprehensive early intervention for low birthweight, premature infants during the first 3 years of life in which intellectual development was an outcome of major importance. The typical infant enrolled in this study weighed 1800g and was of 33 weeks gestational age. There were 377 infants in the intervention group and 608 in the follow-up (control) group.

Rapid antibody test for fragile X syndrome

Willemsen R, Mohkamsing S, De Vries B, Devys D, Van den Ouweland A, Mandel JL, Galjaard H, Oostra B: Rapid antibody test for fragile X syndrome. Lancet 1995, 345:1147-1148. Identification of sufferers and carriers of fragile X syndrome is usually done with a DNA test system; the authors developed a rapid antibody to identify fragile X patients. This noninvasive test requires one or two drops of blood. The authors suggested that it can be used for screening large groups of intellectually disabled individuals and neonates.

A randomised trial of three methods of giving information about prenatal testing
-
Thornton JG, Hewison J, Lilford RJ, Vail A: A randomised trial of three methods of giving information about prenatal testing. B M J 1995, 311:1127-1130. A randomized trial of three methods of information dispersal about prenatal testing to 1691 women booking antenatal care before 15 weeks' gestation. All participants received the usual information about prenatal tests from hospital staff. Individual participants were offered a separate session with a research midwife in which prenatal screening was described in detail. Class participants were offered the same extra information in an early prenatal class.

Using decision analysis to compare policies for antenatal screening for Down's syndrome
-
Fletcher J, Hicks NR, Kay JDS, Boyd PA: Using decision analysis to compare policies for antenatal screening for Down's syndrome. B M J 1995, 311:351-356. To compare different screening policies for Down syndrome across a broad range of outcomes, a decision tree was used to compare data from local sources with the medical literature to predict the likely frequency of several outcomes. Sensitivity analyses were used to test the robustness of the conclusions drawn.
