Ann Rheum Dis 1995, 54:484-490. A study of the local osteogenic and bone resorptive potential of periarticular bone in adjuvant-induced arthritis, which is an animal model of human RA. An uncoupling of bone resorption-formation was demonstrated, possibly mediated through an increase of interleukin-1 in the bone marrow. This increase may contribute to the development of periarticular osteopenia in inflammatory arthritis.

A monozygotic co-twin controlled study, demonstrating reduced BMD at most skeletal sites in twins affected by RA compared with unaffected co-twins. Differences in lean soft tissue correlated with differences in BMD between twins at multiple sites. Findings suggest that osteoporosis in RA is generalized and may be related to the loss of mobility or muscle mass associated with the disease.

J Bone Miner Res 1995, 10:384-393. A cross-sectional study of the determinants of BMD of 115 white women aged 18 years. Body weight, trunk muscle strength, aerobic fitness, and activity level were significant predictors of BMD in this group. Findings suggest that the overall mechanical load applied to the skeleton contributes to peak levels of BMD attained.
