Hepatitis C: Advances in diagnosis
-
Gross JB Jr, Persing DH: Hepatitis C: advances in diagnosis. Mayo Clin Proc 1995, 70:296-297. This article describes various assays available for HCV RNA including the newer technique of genotyping. These quantitative and semiquantitative assays may be useful in monitoring response to interferon treatment.

Extrahepatic immunologic manifestations in chronic hepatitis C and hepatitis C virus serotypes
-
Pawlotsky J-M, Roudot-Thoraval F, Simmonds P, Mellor J, Yahia MB, André C, Voisin MC, Intrator L, Zafrani ES, Duval J, Dhumeaux D: Extrahepatic immunologic manifestations in chronic hepatitis C and hepatitis C virus serotypes. Ann Intern Med 1995, 122:169-173. The authors studied 59 consecutive patients with chronic HCV infection for extrahepatic immunogenic manifestations. The prevalence of these abnormalities was found to be high and did not differ significantly among patients infected with different serotypes.

Association between human parvovirus B19 infection and arthritis
-
Cassinotti P, Bas S, Siegl G, Vischer TL: Association between human parvovirus B19 infection and arthritis. Ann Rheum Dis 1995, 54:498-500. The authors studied 77 adult patients with various arthropathies for evidence of parvovirus B19; prevalence of B19 IgG antibody in these patients (63%) was within the same range as that in the general population. Those with a suspicion of viral arthritis had an increased seroprevalence of anti-B19 IgM and B19 genome.

Antibodies to parvovirus B19 NS-1 protein in infected individuals
-
Poblotzki A, Gigler A, Lang B, Wolf H, Modrow S: Antibodies to parvovirus B19 NS-1 protein in infected individuals. J Gen Virol 1995, 76:519-527. The authors describe an ELISA to detect antibodies to NS-1 in patients with parvovirus B19 that was not previously characterized. These antibodies were detected by western blot analysis and ELISA in the sera of patients with severe parvovirus B19-associated arthritis but not in those with acute or past infection without complications.

Persistence of parvovirus B19 in synovial fluid and bone marrow
-
Nikkari S, Roivainen A, Hannonen P, Möttönen T, Luukkainen R, Yli-Jama T, Toivanen P: Persistence of parvovirus B19 in synovial fluid and bone marrow. Ann Rheum Dis 1995, 54:597-600. The authors used PCR to detect the persistence of parvovirus B19 genome in the synovial fluid cells or peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 61 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis and 28 patients with advanced rheumatoid arthritis. Only two cases of parvovirus B19 infection associated with early seropositive arthritis fulfilling the criteria for rheumatoid arthritis were detected. One patient had erosive arthritis, and the other had self-limiting arthritis; both were HLA-DR4 positive.

A study of the role of pravovirus B19 in rheumatoid arthritis
-
Kerr JR, Cartron JP, Curran MD, Moore JE, Elliott M, Mollan RAB: A study of the role of pravovirus B19 in rheumatoid arthritis. Br J Rheumatol 1995, 34:809-813. The authors studied the etiologic role of parvovirus B19 in rheumatoid arthritis. Twenty-one of 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 20 of 26 patients with osteoarthritis had serologic evidence of previous parvovirus B19 infection (anti-B19 IgG); all were negative for serum B19 DNA. However, B19 was demonstrated in the synovium of 10 of 26 rheumatoid arthritis patients and in nine of 26 osteoarthritis patients.
