Ecological correlations and the behavior of individuals
-
Because the causal relationships between human factors and deforestation vary regionally within countries while the availability of data requires that we analyze these variables at the more aggregated level of the country, we could commit an ecological fallacy in which from patterns in the aggregated data (countries), we incorrectly infer the existence of a similar pattern in more disaggregated units (regions). Because only a small number of countries (Brazil, Indonesia, and India) exhibit regionally distinct patterns of deforestation which are then aggregated into country level data, we think that the possibility of an ecological fallacy in our analysis is small. See Robinson, W. 1950, Ecological correlations and the behavior of individuals. Am. Social. Rev. 15, 351-57.
