J Clin Microbiol 1995, 33:602-608. Biologic fluids from patients with neuroborreliosis were examined by PCR. Genospecies-specific primers to type all B. burgdorferi sensu lato strains were used. The results underscored the relatively high prevalence of pluri-infections in Lyme disease and confirmed the association of B. garinii with neuroborreliosis.

Diagnosis and clinical characteristics of ocular Lyme borreliosis
-
Karma A, Seppälä I, Mikkilä H, Kaakkola S, Viljanen M, Tarkkanen A: Diagnosis and clinical characteristics of ocular Lyme borreliosis. Am J Ophthalmol 1995, 119:127-135. Ten patients with ocular Lyme borreliosis are described. Abnormalities of the posterior segment such as vitreitis, retinal vasculitis, neuroretinitis, choroiditis, and optic neuropathy were seen in six patients. Paralytic mydriasis, interstitial keratitis, episcleritis, and anterior uveitis were seen in one patient each. Ocular borrelial manifestations show characteristics resembling those seen in syphilis. The authors emphasized that late-phase ocular borreliosis may be difficult to diagnose because of seronegativity or weak seropositivity in ELISA assays.

Berglund J, Eitrem R, Ornstein K, Lindberg A, Ringner Å, Elmrud H, Carlsson M, Runehagen A, Svanborg C, Norrby R: An epidemiologic study of Lyme disease in southern Sweden. N Engl J Med 1995, 333:1319-1324. An epidemiologic survey of 1471 cases of Lyme disease was carried out. Lyme disease was found to be very common in southern Sweden, with a relatively high frequency of neurologic complications and arthritis. No ophthalmic changes were reported in this study.

Antibodies against whole sonicated Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes, 41-kilodalton flagellin, and P39 protein in patients with PCR- or culture-proven late Lyme borreliosis
-
Oksi J, Uksila J, Marjamäki M, Nikoskelainen J, Viljanen MK: Antibodies against whole sonicated Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes, 41-kilodalton flagellin, and P39 protein in patients with PCR- or culture-proven late Lyme borreliosis. J Clin Microbiol 1995, 33:2260-2264. The sensitivities and specificities of three ELISAs for B. burgdorferi antibodies were evaluated in patients with culture- or PCR-proven late Lyme borreliosis. The results show that antibodies to B. burgdorferi may be present in low levels or even absent in patients with late Lyme borreliosis. Therefore, in addition to serologic testing, the use of PCR and cultivation is recommended in the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis.

Prevalence of antibodies against Borrelia species in patients with unclassified uveitis in regions in which Lyme disease is endemic
-
Kimura K, Isogai E, Isogai H, Nishikawa T, Masuzawa T, Yoshikawa K, Kotake S, Ohno S, Fujii N: Prevalence of antibodies against Borrelia species in patients with unclassified uveitis in regions in which Lyme disease is endemic. Clin Diagn Lab Immunol 1995, 2:53-56. Serum antibodies against B. burgdorferi were studied in patients with unclassified uveitis in regions where Lyme disease is endemic versus regions where it is nonendemic. The prevalence of antibodies was significantly higher in patients with unclassified uveitis in endemic areas than in uveitis patients in nonendemic areas and in control patients. The authors emphasized that Lyme borreliosis should be considered in patients with unclassified uveitis, especially in endemic areas.
