Computationally it's not possible to integrate functions to ± ∞ hence it's necessary to integrate only as far as 'effective infinities'. In this instance these 'effective infinities' are aided by the fact that all eigenfunctions of physical systems tend to zero at infinity. The actual values for μ and ν are at the discretion of the user, the benefits gained in accuracy have to be weighed against the increased computational effort.
