    • 1 Such terms are open to different interpretations. I am using definitions advanced by Dahlerup, Lovenduski and Randall: 'feminism - ideologies, activities and policies whose goal is to remove discrimination against women and to break down the male domination of society', D. Dahlerup, The New Women's Movement: Feminism and Political power in Europe and the USA (Sage, 1986) p. 6. 'Women's movement - all those individuals, networks, organisations, ideas and practices that espouse feminist values and goals', (J. Lovenduski and V. Randall, Contemporary Feminist Politics, (Oxford University Press, 1993). This does not necessarily incorporate 'Third Wave' feminism as enunciated by Camille Paglia, Naomi Wolfe and Katie Roiphe, which argues that women can deny themselves opportunities by acting the role of victim, but my main concern here is with the experience of the British women's movement from the early 1970s to the early 1990s.
