Differences in airway responsiveness between children and adults living in the same environment
-
Peat JK, Gray EJ, Mellis CM, Leeder SR, Woolcock AG: Differences in airway responsiveness between children and adults living in the same environment. Eur Respir J 1994, 7:1805-1813. From a survey of 1655 children and 1525 adults living in two towns in Australia, these investigators demonstrated higher levels of bronchial hyperresponsiveness and symptomatic asthma among the children. In both populations, there was a strong relationship between asthma and skin reactivity to common allergens. The results are interpreted in relation to documented changes in the levels of mite allergens in houses in Australia.

Association of asthma with serum IgE and skin test reactivity to allergens among children living at high altitude: Tickling the dragon's breath
-
Sporik R, Ingram JM, Price W, Sussman HJ, Honsinger RW, Platts-Mills TAE: Association of asthma with serum IgE and skin test reactivity to allergens among children living at high altitude: tickling the dragon's breath. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 151:1388-1392. A survey of respiratory symptoms and lung function in a middle school was used to identify subjects for a detailed study on sensitization, bronchial reactivity, and the levels of allergen in houses. The results demonstrate that in this high-altitude town at 7000 feet, the major risk factor for asthma was sensitization to cat allergen. By contrast, mite and cockroach sensitization was rare in this population and not related to bronchial reactivity.

House dustmite allergen in bedroom floor dust and respiratory health of children with asthmatic responses
-
Zock JP, Brunekreef B, Hazebroikkampschreur AA, Roosten CW: House dustmite allergen In bedroom floor dust and respiratory health of children with asthmatic responses. Eur Respir J 1994, 7:1254-1259. Among 228 school children with asthma, peak flow variability significantly increased among children with higher concentrations of mite allergen in bedroom floor dust. This effect was more marked in children who were allergic to house dust. Further, the effect was increased with exposure levels below 10 μg Der p 1 per gram of dust.

BMJ 1995, 310:1225-1229. Using PCR to identify a conserved region of Picorna virus, these investigators followed a cohort of children and compared evidence of rhinovirus infection and episodes of wheezing. The results strongly suggest an association between rhinovirus infection and episodes of wheezing.

Risk factors for acute wheezing in Infants and children: Viruses, passive smoke, and IgE antibodies to Inhalant allergens
-
Duff AL, Pomeranz DS, Gelber LE, Price GW, Farris H, Hayden FG, Platts-Mills TAE, Heymann PW: Risk factors for acute wheezing in Infants and children: viruses, passive smoke, and IgE antibodies to Inhalant allergens. Pediatrics 1993, 92:535-540. Infants and children presenting to a university emergency department with wheezing or acute breathlessness were studied for evidence of viral infections or allergy. The results confirm the importance of respiratory syncytial virus in infants younger than 2 years old but not in certain older children. Among children over age 2, allergy to indoor allergens and rhinoviruses was associated with wheezing. The combination of rhinovirus and allergy was strongly associated with wheezing, suggesting that the effects of virus infection may act selectively on allergic children.

Calhoun WJ, Dick EC, Schwartz LB, Busse WW: A common cold virus, rhinovirus 16, potentiates airway inflammation after segmental anti gen bronchoprovocation in allergic subjects. J Clin Invest 1994, 94:2200-2208. The authors infected seven patients with allergic rhinitis and five normal control subjects with rhinovirus and then carried out segmental challenge with allergen. The virus infection led to increased histamine release and increased recruitment of eosinophils among the allergic patients but not among the control subjects.

Role of viral infections in the inception of asthma and allergies during childhood: Could they be protective
-
Martinez F: Role of viral infections in the inception of asthma and allergies during childhood: could they be protective [editorial] ? Thorax 1994, 1189-1191. This editorial analyzes a wide range of studies on the prevalence of asthma in different communities and suggests that repeated viral infection in early childhood could be protective. Although the theory clearly has problems, the analysis puts many confusing observations in perspective.

Serum interleukin & concentrations in atopic and nonatoptc patients with glucocorticoid-dependent chronic severe asthma
-
Alexander AG, Barkans J, Moqbel R, Barnes NC, Kay AB, Corrigan CJ: Serum interleukin & concentrations in atopic and nonatoptc patients with glucocorticoid-dependent chronic severe asthma. Thorax 1994, 49:1231-1233. Interleukin-5 measured by enzyme immunoassay was detected not only in the serum of acute asthmatic patients before steroid therapy but also in the serum of stable glucocorticoid-dependent asthmatic patients. The results support the view that ongoing interteukin-5 release is part of the immunopathology of asthma.
