    • Comparison was necessary to test the hypothesis that the stigma of STD entails patterns of treatment seeking different from those for morally uncompromised infection. Figure 5 visualizes the logic by which different resources are used to secure treatment for different kinds of ailment.

    • In this multi-disciplinary forum, it may be useful to note the qualitative:quantitative opposition does not have the same meaning for medical and social scientists. In the first tradition, qualitative data are those measured on categorical scales-yes/no, more/less-in which values are represented by numbers. Even so they are distinct from data tallied in numerical quantities, such as counts or continuous measurements, which are quantitative. Social scientists share this quantitative concept, but tend to apply the word 'qualitative' to any unenumerated data, and to research or research reports in which numbers do not appear - presumably because the data, by their nature unenumeratable, should not be counted.

    • Within economics, to invest is 'to forego a resource in the immediate/short term to realize a return in the medium/long term'. Note that the formal definition, although not intended for it, makes equal sense applied to investment in non-material resources.

    • This echoes the principle, formulated in ecological and chemical reasoning but neglected in social science, that the viability of any system is limited by the scarcest element.
