28. Saang is a folk illness which is very similar to what we would know as malnutrition, and is considered to be due to the breaking of food taboos or the eating of wrong foods. It was not explored in depth in this study and will not be discussed further.
29. Spirits were sometimes referred to as a cause of another category of diarrhoea, and sometimes as a category itself. Only a minority of villagers considered this to be a cause of diarrhoea.
30. The appearance of dengue haemorrhagic fever may reflect the specific experience of some mothers. Two years before the study, an epidemic of dengue fever had occurred in Sonyang, where the diagnosis was commonly made. The mothers who gave this as a diagnosis in the other two villages also seemed to have experienced the condition. It also may reflect a response to bloody stool rather than diarrhoea.
