Church-based obstetric care in a Yoruba community, Nigeria
-
In Ekiti, the belief that early pregnancies are fragile and can easily be brought down is related to the practice of 'tying a pregnancy' (ideyun), usually accomplished during the first or second month. As described by a woman diviner (iyalawo), a freshly laid, unincubated hen's egg is touched to a woman's vagina, then slowly raised up the front of her body to about sternum level, whereby the pregnancy is said to be tied. The egg is then hidden in the diviner's house until just before delivery, when it is taken out and moved back down the woman's body, thus 'untying' the pregnancy
