45. Interviews in villages in Lau and Kadavu, Fiji during 1992-1994 indicated that many older villagers reported shifts in their fisheries since 1900. Since fishing effort is largely constant in these societies (55, 56), the fluctuations in the abundance of different species are assumed to be a function of recruitment variation.
