They are not necessarily linked to increased plasma triglyceride levels, and thus may not be detected by routine measurements of plasma lipids alone.

This study demonstrated that the incidence of CVD continues to be high after renal transplantation, despite new immunosuppression protocols and more effective management of risk factors. The work also demonstrated a close association between ischemic heart disease, cerebral vascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease after renal transplantation, underscoring the importance of aggressive risk factor management in renal transplant patients who develop a vascular disease event.

This meta-analysis compared and contrasted the relative efficacy of different lipid-lowering strategies in various clinical settings of renal disease. It included 3065 patients and controls in 198 study groups. The results of this study provide a useful framework for choosing antilipemic therapy in patients with renal disease.
