The bone related factor osteopontin was also detected at the mineralizing front of calcified lesions. No osteopontin was detected in non-atherosclerotic arteries.

In this study, soft tissues were examined for the presence and regulation of messenger RNA (mRNA) for the bone-associated protein osteocalcin. The authors demonstrated osteocalcin mRNA in nondiseased human aortae in low amounts, with a 13-fold higher expression of osteocalcin mRNA in calcified aortic plaques.

Using in-situ hybridization the authors identified the cells producing this mRNA as macrophages, smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells.
