Substantial copper contamination was found in the outermost layer of the core sections. Concentrations then decreased in the second or third layers. Good plateaus of concentrations were obtained from the second or third layers for all but one of the investigated core sections; this indicates that the plateau concentration value represents the original concentration in the ice. The only exception was the section from a depth of 294 25 m (dated 1248 years ago). For this section, we used a value extrapolated from the radial profile, which showed a continuous decrease from the outside to the inside

Aluminum and sodium were measured by GFAAS with a precision of 10%. Aluminum is used to normalize copper concentrations in order to compensate for year-to-year changes in parameters such as atmospheric transport or precipitation rates
