    • Sequence variability within the tobacco retrotransposon Tnt1 population
    • Describes a unique study that assesses the variability of sequences required for transcription induction in both genomic and RNA populations. Genomic copies are highly variable in this region, indicating that only a subset of the elements are still active. Differences in the RNA populations in roots versus protoplasts indicate an adaptive capacity that the authors suggest may allow the element to reach a new equilibrium after horizontal transfer to a new host.

    • Integration and nonrandom mutation of a plasma membrane proton ATPase gene fragment within the Bs1 retroelement of maize
    • This report and [30,31] show that a 654 bp region of the Bs1 element derives from a cellular ATPase gene, probably by a mechanism analogous to the transduction of oncogenes by retroviruses. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the ATPase region in cellular and element copies, the authors argue that this region may confer a selective advantage to the element.
