The theme of the first Wits History Workshop in 1978 was the urban history of the Rand. A number of workshops on the history of Cape Town have been held at University of Cape Town during the past 15 years. A workshop on the social history of Durban was held the University of Natal, Durban, in 1983. More recently, in 1992, the history of Port Elizabeth was the theme of a workshop held at the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University.
