    • + and unmodified FEP regions; however, upon ultrasonication in DMAc the PANI was completely removed only from the unmodified FEP surface. Similarly, adsorption of PPY to modified and unmodified FEP took place and selective adhesion to the modified regions was observed only after ultrasonication in methanol

    • Quantitation of the amount of polyelectrolyte on FEP substrates was difficult because the FEP films differed considerably in their degree of crystallinity, both from one region of a sheet to another, and from sheet to sheet. This resulted in varying amounts of scattering (particularly severe at wavelengths < 300nm) which led to problems in obtaining reliable UV absorbance baselines from an FEP reference film. FEP films for multilayer experiments were selected to have spectral characteristics that were as similar to each other as possible, and considerable care was taken to re-position a given film in the same orientation in the spectrophotometer after each iteration of polyelectrolyte bilayer formation in order to obtain accurate relative quantitative absorbance values for the multilayer film spectra

    • 20. We chose to monitor a wavelength (225 nm) associated only with the PSS absorption, rather than with the PANI absorption, because the shape and intensity of the absorption spectrum of PANI is highly dependent on the level of doping which changes slightly during various steps of the multilayer formation procedure

    • 20,21 that at this wavelength an absorbance of 0.0375 corresponds to a PPY film thickness of 3.5 nm. Contributions from scattering as previously discussed were minimal at this wavelength and were not included in the calculation
