    • Variations of the amount of bromine, reaction time, or temperature influence the outcome of the reaction. Attempts to push the reaction to completion or to higher conversions usually result in higher yields of 3 but at the same time lead to the generation of various other brominated derivatives. Under the present conditions, ca. 90 % of crude phenanthroline containing products can be accounted for as unsubstituted phenanthroline, 2 and 3. The remaining 10% contains several other brominated by-products (5-bromo-, 3,5,8-tribromo- and 3,5,6,8-tetrabromo-1,10-phenanthroline) that can be removed by column chromatography.
