    • High-resolution solution structure of the β chemokine hMIP-1β by multidimensional NMR
    • of special interest, In this paper the structure of MIP-1 β is solved, revealing an unusual distinction in the dimer structure between C-X-C and C-C chemokines, even though the monomer structures are very similar. While the biological significance of this finding, if any, is not clear (chemokines seem to function perfectly well as monomers, see [65]), the refinement of this structure, as well as the unusual monomer/dimer dichotomy, make this a paper of interest.

    • Lymphotactin a novel cytokine which represents a new class of chemokine
    • of outstanding interest, in press, This report is the debut for a new branch in the chemokine superfamily. The ‘C’ chemokine lymphotactin lacks cysteines 1 and 3 (and hence probably lacks one of the chemokine disulfide bonds) but retains lymphocyte chemotactic activity. This work should inspire debate among structure/function investigators as well as nomenclaturists for some time.

    • Neutrophil and B cell expansion in mice that lack the murine IL-8 receptor homolog
    • of outstanding interest, This paper reports on the ‘knock out’ mouse for what is likely to be the mouse homolog of the IL-8 RB, a shared E-L-R-C-X-C receptor. The neutrophil and B cell proliferation seen in the mouse cannot be attributed to loss of IL-8 function as mice (and rats) do not appear to have a molecular homolog of IL-8, though other C-X-C chemokines seem to functionally compensate. Whether the observed phenotype is a result of a trafficking or a developmental peturbation remains to be seen. but this mouse will surely be of interest for some time to come.

    • Prevention of lung reperfusion injury in rabbits by a monoclonal antibody against interleukin-8
    • of outstanding interest, One of the first in vivo demonstrations that administration of an antichemokine reagent results in diminution of a pathological condition. The case that this is due to inhibition of IL-8 is far from proven, however, as the use of similar antibodies in rats (which do not have a molecular homolog of IL-8) suggests that anti-IL8 antobodies may also interact with other C-X-C chemokines.
