    • The restricition to a WKB approximation is purely technical and is made in order to derive analytical / estimates for the loss rates. However, the results of this paper, especially Sec. refdiscuss, are not limited to this approximation. A limitation exists only in the sense that the energetically highest / guided atomic eigenmode must be well approximated by a WKB wave function.

    • The HE11 mode always exists for the standard optical fiber (without a hole). This is not true for the hollow fiber. Below a certain critical core thickness [determined by the cutoff condition tan(X)=U/X for the asymmetric slab waveguide], we find that the HE11 mode exists only for hole radii less than a critical value. For larger hole radii, even this mode is cut off and the fiber becomes opaque (``no modes'' regime in Fig. refcutoff).

    • The advantage of this configuration is that it is reasonably far away from the no mode regime. The disadvantage is that it is very close to the multimode region. Even though the fiber is single mode, there exist additional modes with very small attenuation constants.
