    • As pointed out by Wagner et al. citewagner93b, this is the reason why in the optical domain, where photodetectors have a rather low efficiency, the conceptual distinction between waiting time distributions and correlation functions is not so essential.

    • Colloquially, the ``intuition'' here referred to states that the additional noise introduced by an inefficient detector should lead to a waiting time distribution with weakened correlations, a distribution more similar to a Poissonian one, and then the q number should be smaller and of the same sign. This intuition is correct only when the waiting times are uncorrelated, it fails when correlations are present. A simple example is given by a beam of atoms with spacings t1 and t2 that alternate. A detector with efficiency p will measure a waiting time distribution for which q=-2p(1-p)/(2-p) if t1 gg t2. For p=100q=0, whereasp=2 2=58.6 sub Poissonian value q=42-6=-0.343, the most negative value available in this example.
