    • While this paper was reviewed, Hughes et al. reported increased cell death of cultured motor neurons by treatment with NGF, The authors interpret the negative effect of NGF as a possible result of interference of NGF with the binding of BDNF to TrkB, and they refer to a recent report by Dechant et al. (1993). However, Dechant et al. show that NGF does not compete with BDNF binding to TrkB in cells lacking p75. The alternative interpretation, that NGF interferes with binding of BDNF to p75 receptor rather than to TrkB, would conform with the conclusion of our study
