We thank Mr M. C. Elliott, Loughborough University of Technology, who prepared the diazo amide (for details of this preparation see the Experimental section). For relevant literature see, We thank Professor A. Padwa (Emory University, Atlanta, USA) for an improved method for the preparation of ethyl diazomalonyl chloride

This compound was prepared by a method devised by Mr K.J. Doyle, Loughborough University of Technology, according to which the diazo precursor was synthesised by heating the sodium salt of benzenesulfinic acid with ethyl bromoacetate which was followed by diazo transfer using 4-acetamidobenzenesulfonyl azide or 1-ethyl-2-chloropyridinium tetrafluoroborate (15) and sodium azide.

The isopropyloxy malonate has been prepared from the corresponding diazo compound by a method analogous to that of the diethyl analogue 23. The details of this compound are described in the experimental section of this paper.
