    • The similar tendency to ours is found in the reaction using bipyridyl alcohol (1 5).

    • Bolm have reported that enantioselectivity in the reaction increases by introduction of aromatic substituents at 6-position of 1. Mechanistic pathway on ethylation using 2 would be similar to that reported on the reaction using 1 5.

    • (R,R)-2 may not serve as tridentate ligand in this reaction. Because inspection of Dreiding model showed distance of five membered-coordinated zinc and another hydroxyl oxygen is longer than that of ZnO bond length.

    • 2Zn, the reaction mixture became yellow, which may be due to coordination of aldehyde oxygen to zinc atom. In the reaction in hexane, yellow color of the reaction mixture disappeared after 2 min. Although at this time spot of benzaldehyde on TLC (Table 2, entry 4) was not observed, work-up was performed after 10 min.
