One of the authors of this paper is a Central American and two others have worked in Central America for many years. By using the word reading
-
we hope to convey a sense of our close attention to the ways in which the materials discussed here are texts of Latin American women's lives. These texts complement our more situated experiences in the region. Reading is an active, interpretive process facilitated by our personal experiences but constrained by our positions in the North and, for three of us, as United Statesians.

Several of the authors have collaborated in the establishment of an international Network in Communication and Scientific Documentation in Human Rights and Mental Health. The Network was developed at the initiative of psychologists in the Southern Cone to facilitate communication and dissemination of information on (a) the psychological effects of repression
-
(b) treatment and prevention strategies developed under conditions of state-sponsored violence, and (c) the broader social and political realities within which concerns of health and human rights are being addressed. To meet these objectives, member groups of the Network have begun to organize published and unpublished work in these areas into a human rights and mental health data base for access by computer in each region of the Network. Four qualitative bibliographies on selected themes addressed by the Network are available in Spanish from M.B.L.
