    • One of the authors of this paper is a Central American and two others have worked in Central America for many years. By using the word reading
    • we hope to convey a sense of our close attention to the ways in which the materials discussed here are texts of Latin American women's lives. These texts complement our more situated experiences in the region. Reading is an active, interpretive process facilitated by our personal experiences but constrained by our positions in the North and, for three of us, as United Statesians.
