In a task involving a reaction-time hand movement signaled by low amplitude skin stimulation with the hand immobile, only cutaneous (not muscle afferent or other deep) inputs could trigger movement initiation. In adult monkeys trained in such a task, there was a massive practice-induced substitution of effective skin inputs for deep inputs in cortical area 3a.

The capacity for alteration of response selectivity is retained in adults, but on a lower scale than was recorded in pre-critical-period cats. Interestingly, progressive changes in orientation were recorded with this manipulation. If the training orientation varied enough from that initially recorded, the orientation achieved by conditioning moved toward the training orientation and stabilized at a value intermediate between the original and teaching-stimulus orientations. Such observations provide strong evidence for the participation of a significant surrounding region of the cortical network in the genesis and maintenance of orientation tuning.
