    • Metal surfaces are more difficult for atomic imaging using the STM than semiconductor surfaces. Compared to clean Cu(111) [see, the present system is even more difficult., Under conditions for which the Cu atoms are well resolved, the Ag atoms are often not resolved, and vice versa. The present results are obtained under somewhat compromising conditions.

    • The phenomenon of partial disorder in an overlayer has also been reported for the (5 × 5) quasi-periodic structure of Cu on Si(111).

    • Compared to the Ag/Cu system studied here, the Cu/Si system has a considerably more complicated atomic structure, and it is not clear what is being imaged in the STM pictures. For Ag/Cu, the interaction between the substrate and the overlayer can be taken as a small perturbation on the lateral ordering of the overlayer; this is not necessarily true for Cu/Si.
