Ronald L. Numbers and John Harley Warner have recently emphasized that other periods and other cultures may have their own science of medicine, and that to speak of scientific medicine in the singular is thus to assume an ethnocentric point of view: see their paper on ‘The maturation of American medical science’, in Nathan Reingold and Marc Rothenberg (eds), Scientific colonialism, 1800–1930: a cross–cultural comparison, Washington, D.C., Smithsonian Institution Press, 1987. This caveat is well taken. However, as a matter of convenience, I propose to use the term “scientific medicine” in this paper to designate the recognizably modern alliance of the laboratory with medical practice.
