    • Emergence and Refinement of Clustered Horizontal Connections in Cat Striate Cortex
    • of outstanding interest, This excellent paper describes in detail the normal development of the specific patterning of horizontal projections of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the primary visual cortex of the cat. Using retrograde labeling and intracellular filling, it shows that the clustered horizontal connections between regions that have neurons with receptive fields of similar orientation, develop from an initially more-or-less random horizontal outgrowth of axon collaterals followed by selective pruning and arborization.

    • Target selection by Cortical Axons: Alternative Mechanisms to Establish Axonal Connections in the Developing Brain
    • of outstanding interest, This article encapsulates the development of layer 5 projections from cortex to subcortical structures in the midbrain, hindbrain and spinal cord. In a review-like format, it presents the following evidence: first, that layer 5 axons use a novel mechanism of axon targeting to develop subcortical projections, the delayed interstitial budding of axon collaterals from a pre-extended primary axon; second, that a chemotropic mechanism may control the development of at least one of the major collateral projections; third, that layer 5 neurons in all regions of the neocortex initially develop a common pattern of branched projections; and fourth, that the pruning of the primary axon and collaterals is used to develop area-specific subcortical projections of the neocortex.

    • Effects of Binocular Deprivation on the Development of Clustered horizontal Connections in Cat Striate Cortex
    • of special interest, This report is a follow up to the authors' 1990 paper that described the normal development of clustered horizontal connections [13••]. In this paper, they demonstrate that patterned visual activity is necessary for the development of clustered horizontal projections of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in cat primary visual cortex. A conclusion is that patterned activity normally promotes the selective pruning of collaterals that fail to form connections with regions of like-orientation.
