The RRA Notes, produced by the International Institute for Environment and Development (London), are a valuable resource of RRA projects and methods, include highly formal anthropological methods such as pair ranking, direct matrix ranking, oral histories, calendars, use of aerial photographs and so on. The papers published in these Notes deserve fuller, separate analysis See Vol. 1–12, June 1988—July 1991.

For example, we have been involved in research methods and protocol development workshops focusing on qualitative research on women and tropical disease in Africa (1989–1991) supported by WHO/TDR/SER, and Lenore Manderson has also participated in several other method training and protocol development workshops in China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Australia with the WHO/TDR/Fieldlincs programme (1989–1991). The paper by Pelto and Pelto (this issue) draws attention for the need to evaluate these diverse and extensive initiatives.

Formal anthropological methods (such as pile sorts, free lists, rank ordering, multi-dimensional scaling and so on) have considerable value but can be complex, and the computer software to assist with these is not especially accessible, see Hudelson P. M., Kendall C., Leontsini E. and Pelto P. J. Using formal anthropological methods and Anthropac to design dengue fever health education materials. Unpublished paper.
