27. Intergeneric hybridization provides another pattern to be explained. It is restricted to seven orders but is fairly frequent where it does occur. There is an apparent association with bright plumage, especially in males. Intergeneric hybridization may occur because females of these sexually selected species have a flexible mate recognition system. If so, the flexibility requires explanation.
