The five cyanobacteria include the three in Fig. 1, plus Plectonema L2 and Glaeothece PCC6501. The algae with introns include the six listed in Table 1, plus Gracilaria lemaneiformis. The algae without introns include Chara hispida (Fig. 1) and Euglena gracilis [R. B. Hallick, M. J. Hollingsworth, J. A. Nickoloff, Plant Mol. Biol. 3, 169 (1984)], plus Cladophora fracta, Pandorina clone 854, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Stnithora naiadum.

PCR products were purified by preparative electrophoresis, cloned into the Eco RV site of phagemid Bluescript SK+, and sequcnced by the dideoxy chain termination method. Five independent clones (resulting from one to three independent PCR amplifications) were sequenced for each species, and both strands of each product were sequenced. Except for the primer-binding regions, all five clones were identical for any one species. The GenBank accession numbers of the nine intron sequences are M36884 to M36886, M36888 to M36890, M36892, M36893, and M55288.
