    • 1-Ethoxy-1-octyne (11) was prepared as follows: To a solution of ethoxyacetylene (4.56 g, 65 mmol) in THF (70ml) cooled to −80°C was added dropwise n-BuLi (46 ml of a 1.6M solution in hexanes). After 1h at −80°C, HMPA (24.9 ml, 143 mmol) was added, followed 15 min later by a solution of 1-iodohexane (11.02 g, 52 mmol) in THF (10 ml). The cooling bath was removed and the mixture stirred at ambient temperature overnight before being quenched with water. Normal extractive workup then provided (11) (6.88 g, 86%) as a colourless oil after kugelrohr distillation (b.p. 80–90°C, bath)/1mmHg) having spectroscopic data identical to those reported:
