    • In vitro and in vivo activation of human mononuclear phagocytes by interferon-γ: studies with normal and AIDS monocytes
    • Of interest, Part of the profound immunosuppression and susceptibility to opportunistic infection in late AIDS is due to secondary failure of macrophage activation by interferon γ. This study shows that monocytes from AIDS patients are normally responsive to recombinant interferon γ when this is supplied in culture and their activity in vivo can be transiently enhanced by systemic administration.

    • Modulation of CD4 antigens on macrophages and microglia in rat brain
    • Of outstanding interest, Macrophages are the only cells normally present in brain which express CD4, the entry receptor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study in rat explores the control of CD4 on monocytes, macrophages and microglia, to cast light on receptor modulation and its possible role in the pathogenesis of HIV encephalopathy. An unexpected discovery is that the blood brain barrier influences CD4 expression by microglia and that circumventricular cells, which are in contact with plasma products of the sytemic circulation, express higher levels of CD4 than microglia within the blood brain barrier.
