    • We use the abbreviation ‘PT’ only for polythiophene without substituents. To avoid confusion, we use the word ‘polythiophenes’ for the 3-substituted polythiophene derivatives to distinguish them from PT.

    • 1H n.m.r. measurement (from 60 MHz power apparatus) of 2-bromo-3-hexylthiophene, for example, we obtained two pairs of sharply resolved peaks at 7.20 and 7.10 ppm; 6.81 and 6.71 ppm (from TMS). The shift differences for the two pairs of peaks, therefore, correspond to ≈ 5.6 and 5.8 Hz, respectively. These coupling constant values are consistent with those of 2,3-disubstituted thiophenes (ref. 12).
