The taxonomy of mice has recently been revised to bring it Into accord with genetic evidence (2-4). The name Mus domestlcus refers to the wild commensal mice occupying western Europe and land around the Mediterranean Sea as well as their wild descendants that have been carried by humans to other continents; In addition, all of the conmon laboratory strains are derived from Mus domestlcus. which is genetically and morphologically distinct from Mus musculus, the' house mouse of eastern Europe (2, 5, 6)
