The Urbanization Process
-
Joel A. Tarr recently admitted in his introduction to the Journal of Urban History that there has been only a meager response to Roy Lubove's call for a “greater emphasis upon technological development” in the city building process. Mark H. Rose and John G. Clark expressed similar sentiments when they stated that the meager response had been limited to transportation studies. “Actually,” they wrote, “from about 1890 through the early years of the Great Depression, the high-energy technologies, involving natural gas, petroleum, coal, and electricity, along with transportation technologies, such as the automobile, the highway, and the trolley, were critical in facilitating enormous growth and decentralization. But while there are a number of insightful studies of transportation impacts, little has been written about the new energy technologies.”

The following quotation indicates that the oil discovery also was a boon to agriculture. “By a most fortunate conjunction of circumstances the discovery of a bountiful supply of petroleum in this section in the past five or six years has come as a God-send to the horticulturist to enable him, by the use of cheap fuel, to pump water enough from wells to save his trees from destruction.” H. and C.
