A point developed independently by Professor Anthony Wohl in an (unpublished) paper entitled "Working Wives or Healthy Homes" read before the Annual Conference of the Society for the Social History of Medicine at New Hall, Cambridge, July 1977. A Registrar-General's Report published in 1907 groups the causes of infantile deaths into five major categories. Between 1891-1900 the tabulations show that "Wasting Diseases" carried off the largest number of babies under one year (44. 44 per 1. 000 births). This category referred rather loosely to "premature birth, congenital defects and injury at birth, want of breast milk and starvation, atrophy, debility and marasmus." See Supplement to 65th Annual Report of the Registrar General (p. cxi, Table H1)
