Cross-field currents in the KDT relieve the ambipolar electric field along flux tubes fully contained in the plasma, allowing electrons and ions to have different amounts of momentum transport from the core plasma to the edge plasma. The radial ambipolar electric field still restricts the total electron and ion charge transport to limiters and electrodes to be equal.
