Models of physiologic systems have proven useful in identifying important components of many complex systems, from neural networks to three-dimensional protein structures, and they prove no less useful in the neurohypophysis. This study, and the paper by Fitzsimmons et al. • Berghorn KA, Knapp LT, Hoffman GE, Sherman TG: Induction of glucocorticoid receptor expression in hypothalamic magnocellular vasopressin neurons during chronic hypoosmolality. Endocrinology 1995, 136:804-807. These authors describes a novel mechanism in the central nervous system and document the de novo induction of glucocorticoid receptor in hypothalamic magnocellular vasopressin neurons under conditions of hypoosmolality. The capability of physiology-specific steroid feedback control of vasopressin gene expression represents a high degree of plasticity that prompts a closer examination of other physiology-specific feedback circuits.

The Lu-165 line described here is notable because it is the highest vasopressin-expressing cell line reported and may be valuable for general studies on vasopressin production as well as for specific studies on vasopressin expression in cancer cells.

    • Zeng Q, Carter DA, Murphy D: Cell specific expression of a vasopressin transgene in rats. J Neuroendocrinol 1994, 6:469-477. In the absence of reasonable cell lines for vasopressin in vitro studies, the transgenic animal approach represents the best model in which to explore physiologic-appropriate, tissue-specific, and transcriptional expression studies. To do so in rat transgenes makes use of the huge literature on vasopressin biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology. The delimitation of the rat genomic sequences required for cell-specific and osmotically regulated vasopressin expression the in rat is a valuable advance.
