Dealkylation of tert-butylcalix[n]arenes in toluene: Formation of 2,6 and 2,7-dimethylanthracenes

5. 3/I. For a ratio of 5, no anthracene formation was observed and the crude powder was purified by recrystalli/ation in chloroforme-methanoI (40-00) to give 2.7 g (80%) of pure calix[-t]arene. For a ratio of 8. the crude powder was heated at 120 °C under reduced pressure. In these conditions, anthracenes were sublimated and separated from the ealix[4]arene. 0.51 g of a yellow-greenish mixture of 2.6-dimcthylanthracenc VI and 2.7-dimethylanthracene VII and 1.% g of a white powder of pure calix|4]arene II (60% yield) were obtained.
