10. To carry out the estimation of the water layer thickness, we take into account the objective magnification and the diameter of the spatial filter at the conjugate plane. With a x50 objective and 200 μm diam, this leads to a thickness of 2 μm probed at the sample by the detection. In the present case, the band intensity was 100 counts per second for the bulk corresponding to the 2 μm probed. Considering a detection limit of 0.1 count/ second, this fixes the minimum detectable water thickness to 20 Å.
11. Because of the very weak intensity of the reflected light near the Brewster incidence, these measurements have been done with a diode laser mounted on the GESP 5 goniometer.
