    • Although the concept has long been referred to as "Asiatom," I personally prefer "Pacificatom," or more simply, "Paciatom," because the new regional mechanism will have to include such non-Asian countries as the United States, Canada, and Australia among its members. They supply most Asian countries with nuclear reactors, technologies, and raw and enriched uranium; therefore, their cooperation is indispensable to effective nuclear fuel-cycle activities. Indeed, the proposed "Pacificatom" may well be established within the broad framework of the existing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC). Like "Euratom," "Asiatom" or "Pacificatom" would be an informal name.

    • The current Russian-North Korean security treaty expires in 1996. The Russian foreign ministry announced in September 1995 that Russia has proposed that a new security treaty with North Korea omit the obligation to automatically provide military assistance to North Korea should the latter be attacked by a third country.
