The Atlas has been a joint venture between the Historical Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs and the national mapping agency, the Department of Survey and Land Information (DOSLI). The Editor, Dr Malcolm McKinnon, has worked with a small core editorial, cartographic and research team, rarely exceeding seven or eight in size. Their efforts have been in conjunction with a much larger group of voluntary contributors drawn from geography, history, earth science, archaeology and Maori. DOSLI ceased to exist in 1996 and the Atlas cartographers were transferred to a new agency called Terralink NZ Ltd.

Historical geography and the cartographic illusion

note
-
A number of historical atlases were produced in the United States and in Australia in and around 1976 and 1988 respectively. The first (eventually abandoned) attempt to produce a New Zealand historical atlas was for the centennial (in 1940, of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi). More recently, as the editor of this journal has pointed out to me, there has been a striking number of facsimile reprints of early modern maps and atlases produced in some of the 'new' countries of the former Eastern bloc, usually with official financial backing.
