I believe that the editor has misread a ‘v’ for an ‘r’. The use of‘ea’ for the sound normally written ‘a_e’ occurs commonly in Robertson's narrative, making ‘waved’ a logical morphological reconstruction as well as a more appropriate one for the sense of the passage.
