The layer spacing for the smectic A phase is dependent on the carbon number of the alkoxy chain, and is strongly dependent on the temperature. For example, the layer spacing for the pentyloxy homologue is 1-1 (at 137°C) and 1-0 (at 1273C) times the fully extended molecular length. The details will be published elsewhere
