    • This parametrization is slightly different than the one used in Ref. 22. There, the temperature dependence of the RKKY couplings J(R) was considered, and predicted spin correlations were normalized by the local moment langle σz2rangle. This can bring predicted RKKY correlations into closer agreement with exact results for smaller U. However, the systematics of this latter parametrization are unclear, and both parametrizations give the same result in the large-U limit. Thus, we used here only the simpler ground-state RKKY values, and we dropped the langle σz2rangle normalization, as appeared to overestimate the effect on spin correlations of charge fluctuations in the lattice when U=6.

    • For the system we study, the RKKY couplings are of the same order as or greater than the impurity Kondo temperature, and the system has an effective gap. Nozieres has argued that, for depletion effects to be most noticeable in a Fermi liquid, the RKKY couplings would rather be much smaller than the impurity Kondo temperature.
