It was claimed that deposition of mass-selected ions with high energy leads to spectral band broadening. V. E. Bondybey, A. M. Smith, and J. Agreiter, Chem. Rev. 96, 2113 (1996). This difference arises when absorption and laser excitation spectra were compared. However, diacetylene cation for example shows absorption spectra with the same band profile when recorded after mass-selection or after deposition of diacetylene with subsequent vacuum uv irradiation.
